Pot tips
Log vs Linear: use Log for Volume controls (matches the way your ears hear loudness). Either works for Tone — choose Log if undecided.
250k vs 500k vs 1M: 500k is brighter than 250k (less load on the pickup). 500k is more common with humbuckers; 250k tames the brightness of single coils. 1M is brighter still — useful for very dark pickups.
Cleaning vs replacing: a scratchy pot is rarely fully cured by cleaning — worn carbon tracks don't recover. If a clean (with a proper contact cleaner — never WD40) doesn't fix it, replace the pot.
